Equipment Checklist: Learn to Figure Skate
To ensure our skaters are safe and prepared for more advanced skills, please follow these specific guidelines for the Learn to Figure Skate program.
1. Mandatory Helmet Policy
Safety is our top priority. All skaters in the Learn to Figure Skate program must wear a helmet at all times.
- Safety Standards: Helmets must be CSA-approved (look for the sticker).
- Permitted Styles: Hockey helmets are highly recommended; ski helmets are also permitted. Cycling helmets are not permitted.
- Prohibited: Helmets with face cages or shields are not permitted in this program to ensure clear visibility for advanced maneuvers.
- Fit: The helmet should fit snugly and sit low enough to cover the forehead. Face cages or shields are optional.
2. Performance Clothing
Skaters must be able to move freely while staying warm.
- Blue jeans are not permitted on the ice, as they lack the necessary stretch and movement for figure skating.
- Skating tights, skirts, or dresses are not recommended as they don't provide enough warmth.
- Mitts or gloves are required.
- Long hair must be securely tied back (even when wearing a helmet) to keep the skater's vision clear.
3. Figure Skates & Professional Sharpening
All skaters in these programs must wear figure skates.
- We recommend the following brands for proper support:
- Introductory: Jackson: Artiste, Classic, Excel, Mystique. Riedell: Ruby, Topaz, Pearl
- Intermediate/Advanced: Jackson: Elle, Evo, Fusion, Freestyle. Riedell: Stride, Crystal, Diamond, Emerald, Motion
- Recreational skates such as those in the "No" picture below do not have the proper support, toe picks, or blades that are necessary for the performance of figure skating skills.
- Buying Used: If purchasing second-hand skates, ensure the toe picks are intact and the leather still provides firm ankle support.
- Specialized Sharpening: Do not have your skates sharpened at general arena pro-shops. We strongly recommend specialized shops like Professional Skate or The Skate Lab.
- The Toe Pick: Remind the sharpener not to remove or grind down the toe pick, as it is essential for performing figure skating skills.
