Learn to Figure Skate

A rewarding start to Figure Skating!

Our Learn to Figure Skate program is a non-competitive, badge-level program designed to be the next step in a skater's journey. We build on general skating proficiency while introducing basic figure skating techniques. This class provides a strong foundation for skaters wanting to continue with either competitive or non-competitive figure skating paths.

• Focus: Covers levels 4 through 7 of our Badge Levels.
• Pre-Requisites: Previous skating lessons required (see prerequisites below).

📋 Program Overview & Curriculum

This program bridges the gap between basic skating and the specialized world of figure skating. Skaters work in a shared ice environment with our Learn to Skate program while receiving focused instruction on figure-specific techniques:

• Introductory Edges: Refining balance, flexibility, and posture while learning entry-level edges.
• Artistic Movement: Introducing basic turns, crossovers, and the flow required for choreographed sequences.
• Foundational Jumps & Spins: Providing a safe, supportive environment to explore simple rotations and positions.
• Performance Readiness: Building the social and physical confidence needed to move into our advanced Figure Skating classes. (For details on skill evaluations, visit our Assessments & Evaluations page).

Dynamic Grouping Model

Skaters are placed into small groups based on their level and ability. As the season progresses, the curriculum evolves with them so instruction always matches their collective progress:

• Purple Group: Level 4
• Pink Group: Level 5
• Orange Group: Level 6
• Black Group: Level 6/7

🗓️ Schedule & Key Dates

• Days & Time: Tuesdays & Thursdays | 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM (Attendance is required both days; no once-per-week option available).
• Location: Gold Arena
• Season Dates: October 6, 2026 – March 11, 2027
• Christmas Break: Last class is December 10, 2026. Classes resume January 5, 2027.
• Annual Skate Show (Recital): Saturday, March 13, 2027 | 11:00 AM (An important part of our program; please do not book vacations over this date).

💰 Fees & Policies

• Cost: $475 for 40 classes (1 hour each).
• Payment Terms: Can be made in four equal monthly installments, due no later than September 1.

✅ Prerequisites & Requirements

Skaters must have completed one of the following (or equivalent) and submit a report card or progress report verifying completion:

• CCA Figure Skating Club: Learn to Skate Level 3
• Skate Canada Clubs: CanSkate Stage 3
• City of Calgary: Skating 3

Skaters should also be able to:

• Skate forwards and backwards with gliding strides (not shuffling or stepping)
• Perform forwards crossovers confidently
• Demonstrate edge control and stability
• Balance on one foot for 3+ seconds
• Stop confidently both forwards and backwards

⛸️ Equipment Requirements

• Helmet: CSA-certified hockey helmet (face cage/shield not permitted)
• Skates: Figure skates with strong ankle support (not recreational skates)
• Clothing: Warm clothing in layers
• Accessories: Gloves or mitts; long hair securely tied back (even under a helmet)
