CCA Figure Skating Club: Safety & Code of Conduct Policy
Purpose & Scope
The CCA Figure Skating Club is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, welcoming, and positive environment for skaters of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds. Our programs emphasize holistic skating development, personal growth, sportsmanship, and fun.
This policy applies to all registered skaters, parents/guardians, coaches, junior coaches, volunteers, and spectators during all club-sanctioned sessions, events, and activities.
1. On-Ice & Off-Ice Safety Guidelines
Equipment & Apparel
- Helmets: Skaters in Learn to Skate, Learn to Figure Skate, Pre-School, Hockey Buddies, and Power Skating must wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet until reaching the required program proficiency standard.
- Skate Safety: Skates must fit properly, be adequately laced, and be equipped with guards when walking off the ice surface.
- Appropriate Attire: Skaters must wear fitted, stretchable athletic clothing that allows free movement without dangling elements or hazards. Long hair must be tied back securely.
- No Food or Chewing Gum: Food, gum, and soft drinks are prohibited on the ice. Water in non-breakable plastic or aluminum bottles is permitted at the boards.
Ice Etiquette & Flow
- Right-of-Way: Skaters receiving direct instruction from a coach or performing a solo/routine always have the right-of-way. Other skaters must yield and maintain spatial awareness.
- Safe Grouping: Skaters must avoid congregating or standing still in high-traffic areas, near the center of the rink, or along fast-skating paths.
- Fall Protocol: When a fall occurs, skaters should get up promptly if uninjured. If a skater appears injured, coaches or ice monitors will assess before moving them.
2. Code of Conduct
For Skaters
- Respect & Kindness: Treat coaches, junior coaches, fellow skaters, facility staff, and volunteers with courtesy, dignity, and encouragement.
- Positive Attitude: Foster a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable learning at their own pace without judgment or fear of making mistakes.
- Active Engagement: Listen attentively to coaching instructions, follow rink rules, and refrain from disruptive or unsafe behavior on or off the ice.
- Zero Tolerance for Bullying: Verbal abuse, taunting, physical aggression, exclusion, or harassment of any kind (in person or online) will not be tolerated.
For Parents & Guardians
- Supportive Spectating: Encourage your child’s progress and effort. Model good sportsmanship and positive behavior from designated spectating areas.
- Non-Interference: Allow coaches to lead and instruct during sessions. Refrain from coaching from the boards or grandstands during active ice time.
- Respectful Communication: Address any questions, concerns, or feedback directly with club representatives or coaches in a respectful, constructive manner outside of active session times.
- Timeliness: Ensure skaters arrive on time for their scheduled sessions with proper gear and are picked up promptly at the conclusion of ice time.
For Coaches & Mentors
- Safe & Positive Instruction: Provide constructive, encouraging guidance tailored to individual learning styles and developmental needs.
- Lead by Example: Demonstrate high standards of professionalism, fairness, integrity, and sportsmanship at all times.
- Safety First: Maintain a vigilant focus on ice safety, proper progression, and injury prevention during all training sessions.
3. Reporting & Policy Enforcement
- Reporting Issues: Any safety concern, incident, or breach of conduct should be brought to the immediate attention of a club coach or administrator, or submitted via email to info@ccafigureskatingclub.ca.
- Disciplinary Steps: Non-compliance with safety rules or behavioral standards may result in the following progressive measures depending on severity:
-
- Verbal warning and reminder of policy standards.
- Direct parent/guardian consultation (for minor participants).
- Temporary removal from the ice session or activity.
- Suspension or revocation of club membership without refund for repeated or severe violations.
